Beau Parent in Class

In July 2014, Freeman unexpectedly lost a pillar of the Tulane accounting community, Professor Beau Parent. For 37 years, Beau taught Financial Accounting to nearly every business undergraduate student. His sudden death came as a shock to the thousands he taught over the years.

Beau’s impact was frequently recognized. He earned the BSM Honor Roll teaching award as well as the James Murphy Award for Excellence in Teaching. Twice he received the Howard Wisner Award given by undergraduates to teachers who demonstrate exceptional service to students, above and beyond what is required. Beau developed the school’s five-year Master of Accounting program and took special pride in helping students land internships at top firms throughout the country.

His teachings inspired countless students to pursue careers in accounting. Many former students remember how he made accounting fun, with timeless sayings such as “debits on the left by the window, credits on the right by the wall.”

Beau’s family, along with Freeman alumni, faculty, staff and friends, have come together to establish a fund that will honor Beau’s memory at the Freeman School. Funds are being raised for a scholarship, which will benefit worthy Tulane undergraduate students pursuing a graduate degree in accounting.
