Charitable IRA Rollover Tax Advantage
A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old and Older

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Tulane University without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference at Tulane. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making. Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

Talk to your advisor about the advantage of directly transferring gifts from your retirement plan to Tulane. Your accountant or other advisor can also help you determine the optimum amount to give from retirement plan accounts under federal and state tax laws.

To help us track your IRA gift, please inform us of your intent to make a gift from your IRA by filling out this form. If you have further questions or need to contact someone in development, contact Gift Administration at 1-800-933-6886 (toll free), 504-865-4438,  or tugift@tulane.edu. For more information about supporting Tulane with gifts from you IRA, please contact the Office of Gift Planning, giftplanning@tulane.edu or toll-free at 1-800-999-0181.

Benefits of using a donor advised fund

A DAF can serve as a convenient alternative for a donor who does not wish to make direct grants to charity or form a private foundation. Your gift to any donor advised fund is tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Once an account is created, you may use it as a fund to support your favorite causes. A donor advised fund also offers professional investment management for the assets held in the account and administrative ease, all at a competitive cost.

Benefits to giving through at DAF include:

  • Receive an immediate charitable tax deduction
  • Follow your own timetable for distributions
  • Give to multiple charities from the same fund
  • Make gifts of complex assets, such as life insurance, art, real estate, private company stock, restricted stock, limited liability and limited partnership interests
  • Take advantage of competitive fees and expert investment management
  • The opportunity to engage your whole family in philanthropic opportunities

Be Charitable With Cryptocurrency

Many of us routinely write checks to important causes that are close to our hearts. By doing so, we see the benefits of our generosity firsthand. On the other hand, when you make a future gift, you ensure the success of Tulane for generations to come—and in the ever-evolving digital age, cryptocurrency is a great way to do so.

If you own Bitcoin or Ethereum, chances are it is worth more than what you paid for it. Many investors have a very low-cost basis and should evaluate the tax implications before cashing in.

One impactful option that can save you on taxes: using cryptocurrency to support our mission.

Your Benefits

Your cryptocurrency gift to Tulane University qualifies for an income tax deduction for its fair market value, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) with a five-year carryover. If you have held your cryptocurrency for more than a year, you also avoid the capital gains tax you would have paid if you sold it.

Your gift will continue to advance Tulane University as a global leader in research, entrepreneurship and innovation. If you have an interest in designating your gift for a school, unit, college or fund, or to establish a named fund, please contact the Office of Gift Planning for additional assistance.

2 Simple Steps

Step 1: Ask if the charitable organization accepts gifts of cryptocurrency (ours does). Alternatively, if you have a donor advised fund, confirm with them if you are able to transfer cryptocurrency to your account. Then you will be able to recommend a grant to charitable organizations.

Step 2: Transfer your cryptocurrency. Work with the charitable organization or your donor advised fund provider to make the transfer via their online wallet tool. Contact us at giftplanning@tulane.edu to get transfer instructions and information about gifts of cryptocurrency.

This gift is right for you if:

  • You would like to receive a federal income tax deduction in the year you make your gift.
  • You would like to avoid capital gains tax.
  • You would like to make an impact on our mission.

An Example of How It Works

Longtime Tulane supporters Kevin and Sheila have two goals. First, they want to make sure Tulane receives support during their lifetimes, and second, they would like their legacy to continue after they are gone. Kevin and Sheila make a $50,000 donation of cryptocurrency to start their endowment. After conversion, the donation is invested. Since donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, Kevin and Sheila do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it from their taxes. Each year, a portion of the income from the invested money will be used to support our mission in Kevin and Sheila's honor.

Build Your Legacy

Long-term and strategic giving opportunities that create enduring support for Tulane’s future.

You can establish a named endowed fund to recognize and honor friends, family members, colleagues and mentors, or to simply provide support for the university in perpetuity.

You can designate your named fund to provide support for Tulane in general or for any school, unit or program.

An endowed fund is a permanent fund from which only the endowment payout, calculated according to Tulane's spending policy, is spent. The fund's share of the endowment payout determines the amount of the annual award.

A minimum gift of $25,000 currently is required to establish a general endowed fund, and higher minimum donation amounts are required for specific purposes. For detailed information on Tulane endowed fund minimum donation amounts, please contact us.

State Matching Funds
Endowed chairs and professorships provide financial support that rewards distinguished scholars and teachers who have become nationally recognized in an academic discipline.

The minimum donation amounts currently required for Tulane endowed chairs and professorships generally are $1.5 million for a chair, $600,000 for a professorship for experienced faculty, and $300,000 for an early career professorship. Higher minimum donation amounts may be required for chairs or professorships in particular disciplines.

For detailed information on Tulane endowed fund minimum donation amounts, please contact us.

The Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund (BRSF), administered by the Board of Regents (BOR) for the benefit of all the colleges and universities in Louisiana, offers matching funds for private gifts for faculty endowment support to reward and retain outstanding faculty. Matching fund awards are the decision of the BOR, and are not guaranteed. The minimum donation amounts to establish endowed chairs or professorships do not include matching fund awards.

For information on Board of Regents matching funds, please contact us.
